Timber frame erection is the work Michael Murphy loves most and has done for years. We erect timber frame kits across Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire, Edinburgh and all of Scotland — panels up, walls sheeted, roof on, weathertight. The foundation of every great self build, done right.
Timber frame is the most popular self build method in Scotland — and for good reason. It's faster than traditional masonry, more energy efficient, and delivers a highly accurate structure that performs exceptionally well in Scotland's climate.
At Murphy Construction we've been erecting timber frame kits across Scotland for years. We know the common pitfalls, the right suppliers, and how to coordinate the erection stage so it doesn't become the bottleneck that delays your whole build.
Scotland's climate demands a properly detailed timber frame. We ensure every kit we erect is correctly installed, properly sealed, and ready for follow-on trades without compromise.
A timber frame shell can be erected in days rather than the weeks required for traditional masonry — getting you to weathertight stage faster and reducing your overall programme.
Timber frame construction lends itself to high levels of insulation, airtightness and energy performance — important in Scotland where heating costs matter.
Timber frame suits virtually any architectural design — from traditional Scottish farmhouse styles to contemporary open-plan layouts with large spans and glazing.
When correctly detailed and installed, timber frame performs exceptionally well in Scotland's wet climate. Getting the erection right is everything — that's where we earn our keep.
We work with your architect and structural engineer to specify the right timber frame system for your build — reviewing drawings, advising on details, and ensuring the kit is designed for efficient erection on site.
We source timber frame kits from Scotland's leading manufacturers. Our established relationships mean competitive pricing, reliable delivery schedules, and kits manufactured to a consistently high standard.
The critical stage — and our core specialism. Our experienced team erects your timber frame to the manufacturer's specification, correctly and accurately, typically within days rather than weeks.
We complete the frame to full weathertight stage — roof covering, windows, external doors and airtightness membranes installed — so your build is protected and follow-on trades can start without delay.
Once weathertight, we can coordinate all follow-on trades — from first fix mechanical and electrical through to plaster, joinery, finishes and snagging — delivering a fully completed home.
Full snagging inspection before handover, all Scottish building regulation completion certificates in order, and a complete documentation pack for your new timber frame home.
We erect timber frame kits across the whole of Scotland — from Glasgow and the Central Belt to Edinburgh, Ayrshire, Stirling, and beyond. If you have a plot and a kit, we'll be there.
For a typical two-storey self build, the frame erection stage takes between three and ten working days depending on complexity and size. Getting to full weathertight stage — including roof, windows and doors — typically takes two to four weeks. This is significantly faster than traditional masonry construction.
Yes — we can manage the full supply and erection package, sourcing your kit from Scotland's leading timber frame manufacturers and managing delivery to site. Alternatively, if you already have a kit arranged, we can erect only. We'll advise on the best approach for your project.
Once the frame is up and weathertight, we can coordinate all follow-on trades — first fix mechanical and electrical, insulation, boarding, plastering, joinery, and finishes through to a fully completed home. We can provide a full build contract or hand over to your own contractors — your choice.
Yes — we work from your architect's drawings and coordinate with your structural engineer to ensure the kit is specified correctly for your design. We're experienced with a wide range of architectural styles, from traditional Scottish farmhouse to contemporary open-plan designs.
Absolutely — when correctly detailed and installed, timber frame performs exceptionally well in Scotland. The key is getting the erection and airtightness details right from the outset. That's precisely where our experience makes the difference — we've erected frames across Scotland in all weather conditions.
Yes — this is one of our strongest offerings. Murphy Construction erects and builds the timber frame self build while Murphy Project Management provides MCIOB-qualified oversight, budget control and compliance management. You get a fully integrated team with one point of accountability for the entire project.
Tell us about your self build or new build and we'll provide a detailed timber frame quote — supply, erection, or full build contract.

Murphy Construction is led by Michael Murphy — a joiner by trade who started as an apprentice and has spent 18 years working across construction sites in Scotland. Michael does the work himself. Timber frame erection, wall sheeting, first fix joinery — this is what he loves and what he is genuinely excellent at.
The business is built around that core skill set and supported by a tight network of specialist subcontractors Michael has worked alongside for years — trusted groundworkers, roofers, plumbers and electricians who share the same standards. You don't get strangers on your site. Every trade has been chosen because they've proven themselves on previous projects.
Murphy Construction deliberately focuses on self builds and timber frame because that is where Michael's skills and passion sit. The goal isn't to be the biggest building company in Scotland — it's to be the one people call when they want their self build done properly, by someone who actually cares about the craft.
For clients who also need professional project management — budget control, compliance, contractor coordination — Murphy Construction works closely with its sister company Murphy Project Management, which provides MCIOB-qualified oversight across the whole project.
We don't rush jobs and we don't cut corners. Every build we're on gets the same standard of care — whether it's a kitchen extension or a full timber frame self build.
Transparent quotes, honest timelines, and straight talking if something changes. We tell clients what they need to hear, not what's easiest to say.
Michael started as a joiner. That pride in craftsmanship runs through everything Murphy Construction does — from the precision of a timber frame erection to the finish of a skirting board.

We're based in Glasgow and cover the whole of Scotland — including Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, Ayrshire, Edinburgh, Stirling, Falkirk, and further afield. For timber frame erection especially, distance is rarely an issue if the project is the right fit.
Murphy Construction is the building arm — we do the physical construction work: timber frame, self builds, extensions, renovations. Murphy Project Management provides professional project oversight, budget control, contractor coordination and compliance management. They are sister companies. You can use one or both — many clients use Murphy Construction to build and Murphy PM to manage the overall project.
Fill in the contact form or call us on 07387 982 751. We'll get back to you within one working day. For extensions and renovations we'll usually arrange a site visit. For timber frame and self builds, we can work from your architect's drawings to provide an initial budget before visiting site.
We focus on projects of a meaningful size — timber frame kits, self builds, extensions, full renovations and commercial fit-outs. We don't typically take on maintenance or small repair work. If you're not sure whether your project is the right fit, just give us a call and we'll tell you honestly.
We don't apply for planning permission on your behalf — that's typically handled by your architect. However, we do manage building warrant submissions, staged inspections, and completion certificates as part of our construction service. If you need a project manager to oversee the entire process, our sister company Murphy Project Management handles this.
It depends entirely on the scope. A single-storey extension might take 8–12 weeks. A full timber frame self build from groundworks to handover typically takes 9–18 months depending on size and specification. We'll give you a realistic programme as part of your quote — and we don't give you an optimistic timeline just to win the work.
Yes — most of our clients come to us with an architect already in place. We work from your drawings, coordinate with your architect on any design queries during the build, and manage the relationship with your structural engineer where required. We're experienced at fitting smoothly into an existing project team.
Yes — Murphy Construction carries full public liability insurance and all works comply with Scottish building regulations. We manage building warrant inspections at the required stages and ensure all certifications are in order at practical completion. Full documentation is provided at handover.
We're happy to answer any questions before you commit to anything.

"I started because I was sick of seeing people get ripped off. People with a plot of land and a dream — ending up with cowboy builders, money gone, and a build that was never right. I wanted to be the person they could actually trust."
Michael started as an apprentice joiner and spent 18 years working through every aspect of construction. What drives him is the transformation — watching an empty plot or a tired building become somewhere a family calls home. That process, from start to finish, is what he loves about this industry.
His kids are his biggest motivation. Murphy Construction isn't just a business — it's a legacy. Something built properly, on a foundation of real craft and honest work, that his children can step into one day.
When Michael is on your build, he's not managing from a distance. He's there. Doing the work, solving the problems, making sure every detail is right — because that's the only way he knows how to do it.
